Hi gang

I was thinking of adopting K-14 to mix my next album - anyone else adopting this system and what do you think of it?
Cheers

I use it since a long time.
Don' t make the mistake and use it only for metering. You have also to setup your monitor calibration in order to use the real advantages of the K-System.

I makes everything a lot easier !!!

Yeah it's great - I have calibrated my monitors to 79dB pink noise for K-14 and I really love it.

DYNAMICS are back in my mixes.

I recently did the same thing. Using the PL K-14 preset, I did as Bob Katz suggested and used 83 dB pink noise, as my reference, for calibrating my monitoring system. I must be getting old, cause even 83dB's is loud, for listening to, over an extended period of time. Maybe I should back it down a few dB's, as well.

He actually recommends 79dB for K-14 and 85dB for K-20 if I understand his white paper correctly.
Hmmm.......I don't why I was thinking it was 83db. I'll recalibrate to 79dB, my ears will thank me later. :)

Read and then go to downloads and get the \"-20 dBFS RMS pink noise 44.1\" and a SPL meter.

For K14 add 6dB to the soundfile so that is will be at 0dB on a K14 scale and adjust monitors one at a time to read 83dB SPL with C-weight and Slow on a SPL meter at listening spot.

Interesting ahna I seem to have his old white paper where he duiscusses 79dB and 85dB NOW on his website is something newer and updated.

Thanks

k-system

ok guys...

so ive got the k-14 system going and ive read the Bob Katz book but ive got a couple questions regarding real world usage with WaveLab and the Precision limiter. im referring to actual songs here, not the pink noise file.

a. how often should i be going into the red, and how far?
b. to help ensure my dynamics what should my max, minimum, and average RMS's be?
c. am i looking for a certian ratio between my RMS levels?

and finally...

d. what levels should my mixes be (coming from cubase) set at?

ive read so many differing opions on this. i know a good deal has to do with what the music is but any General Information would help here. thanks in advance.

Well, this is the real meat isn't it? The nice thing about the K-System is that it levels the playback issues - Now you can worry that the details will actually transfer.
I am currently trying to find the widest dynamic range that I feel is right - and that depends on the style of the music. Even down to the 'sub genres' - Judas Priest would have a different range than AC/DC. But if I had to give generic numbers for a generic light-pop with vocals, -5/3dB (with vocal in) -12/9dB (no vocals)for first verse, 0/+3dB First Chorus, hitting +5 in the big moments of the last Chorus or climax.

I have already used the K-14 metering in inspector XL and the precison limiter but I just now ordered my SPL meter. I will be doing some mixes next week already on calibrated monitors so I will post experience later :D

So I finally received my SPL meter and calibrated my monitor before I was about to starting to mix a new project.

The first thing I have noticed is that before I was pushing the faders up and now I am turning them down 8)

At the and of the day when I had finished the first song I realized that there wasn't a signle peak on my mixbuss for the whole day. the mix peaks somewhere -9 dbfs it has dynamics and huge headroom.

I was actually quite impressed with the results :p
