Who would like a Distressor emulation?

very tasty idea ... I've been thinking of getting a pair but I would gladly wait if I knew a plug was in the works ... :p

I think this would be useful. I remember some people saying this would be obsolete, because we already have emulations of the real boxes the Distressor is mimicing. However, the Distressor does sound different than the 1176 and it has some additional features, like more choices for the ratio and adjustable HP in the sidechain detection circuit.

Having said that, a plugin Distressor would still remain pretty low on my priority list. I also wonder if they would run into any legal problems with Empirical Labs.

Count me in for a distressor/fatso bundle. I agree with the above...the hardware IS different.

The Distressor is awesome, I love mine, but an emulation would need licencing as mentioned...look at the agreement between UA and Roland to do the CE-1 and the DD.

Strange to think UA would have to license something that's sort of a copy of an 1176 to begin with. ;) Anyway, I'm not personally a fan of the Distressor but I'm sure a lot of people would get a UAD-1 just for it if there's a plug-in version.

If they could emulate the Distressor well I would dig deep in my pocket!
The Distressor is my favorite all around compressor. I record with it and demand at least 3 of them for my mix sessions.

Oh boy!

Yes please, in Black. Marcus Miller and Tony Levon both use them in their racks. Only used one once on bass and it still leaves me misty eyed.

I just bought a Distressor as well as two LA 4 compressors and I must say, the real hardware is amazing. Don't get me wrong, the UAD stuff rocks but the real thing is SOOO nice.

Personally the URS Eq plugins are great, so I'm not in the market for eq's but I'd like to see some pre-amp plugins emulated. API, Neve, Avalon....A Distressor plug would be cool as well. I wish I could have a Sansamp PSA-1 plugin....maybe a Neve Limiter, or DBX 160 compressor or an SSL compressor....anyways....thats enough dreaming.

The next objective should be a new card, with more power...I'll take more instances of what I already have, than new plug-ins any day.

UA is already halfway there if a Distressor emulation was to be done. Under the hood, it's basically an 1176 circuit without transformers or discrete circuitry. They also add an analog clipper for the saturation modes. On the 1176 emu, the transformer saturation was probably the hardest to replicate, yet they did it pretty well... Maybe similar techniques could be used to duplicate the clipper section on the distressor?

Nah, they would just ahvce to change the name.
they could call it :" This Dresser", and they would be fine.

There's a Catch 22 there. UA sells a lot of plugins called "Fairchild" because a lot of people think they're buying an exact replica of the hardware in a plugin. I bet they'd sell 5 times as many plugins if they actually licensed the Distressor name, instead of releasing it under a generic or close name. But then you'd probably pay a lot more for the plugin, because no hardware manufacturer wants to undercut their sales with cheap plugin versions.
