i know you can occasionally pick up a magma chassis on ebay for much less than retail, but why are they so expensive new? are there no alternatives, so magma can keep charging a grand for a computer case and mobo?

Yes - I was shocked at the price of these bad-boys.

A corny analogy: when you need to convert a 1/4 inch jack to a 1/8 inch jack, you can do so for about 5 bucks. When you want to convert PCI to Firewire, you're looking at about a grand! Damn!

It's a shame it can't be done by utilising an old PC with enough PCI slots ( dirt cheap ), and some kind of interface to your main DAW that has enough bandwidth to cope.

What about SCSI? Is that fast enough? I dunno? If it were, surely it would be just down to writing the driver software?

Just some thoughts. :)

Paul, that already exists, it is called FXteleport. Audio over Lan.

What about latency with FXteleport.

Would it be the same latency, like having the UAD-1 in the same PC as the PC runing your DAW?

I don´t use fx teleport for uad but for vsti, with that the latency is at least 1 audio buffer sometimes 2 under heavy load. Sx and nuendo compensate automaticly. I don´t know if the latency of the uads is also compensated. I don´t think it´s a good solution anyway because every plug has to be streamed up and down over the network. That´s why I use it for heavy vsti´s. then you only downstream 1 stereo pair per synth.
That works great by the way. I have a main daw with a pIV 2.4 @ 3ghz and a slave pIII 1400s. I can for instance run a very heavy reaktor synth on the slave that uses 90% of that cpu without a load on the main daw. ( or ofcourse quit a few lighter synths)
BTW cheaper magma would be great! ...that is if it's got 4 uads in it....
