I would like to make it a lot :!: less noisy...anyone out there to recommend a good PSU. Are the fanless ones a no go, otherwise they look like a good deal (soundwise, that is...)

Is the SBS working for you? i had thought that only the Magma would work...at least with PC's. What type of system do you use?

Yes Cat, Giles is right...Silenx hasn´t got a distributor here in Sweden, so I´ll look for another brand, thanx anyway!

Thanks. i guess it was forum rumors that made me assume the SBS wouldn't work as well. If you do a search you'll find it too.

Damn...I let one go for $220!!!! Oh well...another will surface eventually.

I am not so sure they are the same hardware.

For example the magma boxes have cards on both sides right?? while the SBC boxes do noe.

Are they the same? And more importantly, let us know how it works. ;)

Not all magmas have cards on both sides. My magma has one card on one side.

As time goes on they improve the product.

My cousins PT rig back in 2000 with a 7 slot MAGMA had 1 card in it as well. Just depends where in the design and production timeline his chassis was produced.

I will try the setup to the max this weekend, I´ll let you know how it´s working out...

A bit nearer to you than Detroit, you could try http://www.quietpc.com. I already had a Quiet PC 300W PSU from my old (retired) DAW that i dropped into my rackmounted 7-slot Magma, but I bought 3 new 92mm Dust proof Acoustifans to replace the standard case fans and now it sits quietly alongside my Carillon AC-1 :D

Actualy, SBS and Magma are two seperate companies. Both are (and were) sold as OEM products by Digidesign and Avid (Digidesigns parent company and video unit). People on this site and Powercore Forum have reported problems when using the SBS systems. I have no experience with the SBS solutions to provide an answer on this. Though I do have an Avid labeled Magma system that works great.

This all seems correct to me as far as I understand the situation. SBS and Magma are 2 distincly different companies and their products are different (but of course similar in concept).

It also seems to be more than just a rumor that some people (me included) have had problems with SBS chassis versions... at least some of them. Though others seem to have had good luck.

And so, this seems to never be really resolved. Can anyone say with absolute certainty what the situation is here? Unless ..and until... someone does, I remain a bit gun shy of the SBS versions.

Cheers,

Tried it out and I am a happy camper right now :D

Works beautifully with my three cards (gonna get me a fourth now, I guess...), no worries at all, just Plug-and Play!!!

Turns out that the biggest noise was coming from the HUGE fans on the front, I´ll leave them off for now and will change them if I get any problems.

The only thing now is to try to make the box smaller...it´s silly how much empty space it´s inside
The case is built like a tank though so it will take a bit of cutting and welding and stuff...
It says \"Digidesign Pro Tools\" on the front, but that will just have to go. I´ve been bashing Pro Tools too much (for overpricing, not the product) to leave it there

Now, where to get the money for that fourth card...... :?

Chewie,

Would you be able to provide the model number for the SBS chassis and cards you are using? It might help others, who are interested in going the SBS route with a PCI Expansion chassis.

Also, for quieter fans, I would look into PanFlo fans. I used them when I replaced all of my Magma chassis fans. Also, I replaced the stock PSU with an Enermax Noisetaker model. Replacing both of these items, helped tremendously. In addition, I use PanFlo fans in my Dual Opteron system, they work quite well and are very quiet.

Will do, as soon as I can...
Went crazy and picked up a used UAD, to get to 4  , so I´ll try to max ´em out in the next few days :p

When you´re doing 70´s retro prog, you really run out of juice fast...1176´s all over the place and Plate´s and Pultec´s and Fairchild´s and............you get the picture, don´t you

So hewie,

You're not experiencing any strange CPU loading or other ill effects? If in fact the SBS really works okay i suspect plenty of folks here will be happy to hear it. They go for $200 or less, unlike the Magmas which have been selling for upwards of $400+.

Search for Pro Tools Expansion, Avid Expansion, PCI expansion, SBS Expansion, etc. and there are plenty of listings CHEAP. This could be a great discovery since I had only heard steer clear of the SBS, but nobody ever said why.
