Currently I have an x4 and two x8p units. I’m using one of the x8p’s for main monitor out. I’m considering making some changes.
On the used market, the x8p and x16 are pretty close to same price. I could sell one or both of the x8p units and replace them with on or two x16s.
My outboard collection has grown to the point that I’m no longer using the onboard x8p pres. I have twenty channels of outboard pres plus a few compressors that I sometimes use as hardware inserts with Pro Tools.
I also have an older Hearback headphone distribution unit connected via ADAT that holds me to 48 kHz sampling rate. If I could muster 8 more analog outs then I could run Apollo out over DB25 to Hearback DB25 analog in, freeing me up to run sessions at 96 kHz.
So far as I understand, I’m presently constrained to using analog outs on my main monitor x8p only—the analog outs on my second x8p are not available with my current configuration to drive the Hearback via analog out.
The x16 does not feature monitor outs on the rear panel. If I keep x8p, sell the second x8p and replace it with an x16, I have this troubling hunch that I would not be able to use the x8p for monitor out AND simultaneously use the x16 for hardware insert ins and outs to outboard plus with analog outs to Hearback unit.
If I switch to using the x4 for monitor outs then I’m down to two cues instead of four (I think) which is not an option for me.
I’m doing stereo work exclusively, no surround nor Atmos.
Here are my options as I see them:
Baseline: x8p + x8p + x4 + Hearback ADAT
Option A: x8p + x16 + x4 + Hearback analog
Option B: x16 + x16 + x4 + Hearback analog
Option C: x16 + x4 + Hearback analog
if it’s not obvious from above, I’m a little confused about these options and their respective constraints. I appreciate any help or advice available here. Thank you.
