    DI Tracking with Unison Pres

I still haven't tried running DI, when using my POD XT, thru a unison pre set to line. I just link up two line-in channels in Console, set it to +4 and plug in the L+R outputs (w/ balanced cables).

I'm curious to hear how you guys set up a DI tracking chain. Are there certain Pre's that work better for this? I use the POD XT for both electric guitar and bass.

I currently have the 610a/b and Neve 88rs.

The Unison pre won't be used while connecting to line in, but the line input of the plugin would.

Is the POD XT's out really a DI, or is it line out? If it's a DI you'd run it to the preamp as if it were a mic. If it's line you would not run it to the preamp, but rather the line input.

    A quick glance here http://line6.com/legacy/podxt/
tells me it's not DI, but it's actually +4dBu line outs.

So, it looks like you'd just go to the line in (TRS) on Apollo and, yes, +4 on the Apollo settings would be correct.

Since you're line in you'll bypass the preamp, so Unison will not really have any affect. You can use either the Unison slot (which always prints), or the standard insert slot for the 610.

Right, what I was getting at is if people run line level units, like the POD XT, do you run them thru a unison pre set to line level? I'm curious if you get a better sound going that route. And if you do, which is your favorite Pre for this?

No, don't do it. You'll just be creating problems. Whatever effect you're hoping to gain from Unison pre's, use tape, saturation, or EQ plugins instead.

Haha, right on. What would be an example, then, of when to use the line setting (instead of mic) on a union pre? What is I was playing Bass into one of the Hi-Z inputs (on the front of the Apollo)?

It's not really beneficial sound-wise. I guess the best reason to do it is if you want to track the Unison plugin and leave the remaining inserts in monitor mode.

I can't comment, I only have a silver Apollo so my Hi-Z input doesn't react to Unison plugins the way that other Apollos do. With that said, the Ampeg B-15n is amazing!

I have the silverface too. The two Hi-Z inputs aren't "Analog 1" and "Analog 2" in Console? I never knew you couldn't track them thru a unison pre.

What would the unit do if you plugged an instrument into Hi-Z 1 and a mic into Mic Pre 1? Would one override the other? If so, which? I'm not planning on doing this, just curious.

HiZ 1 will mute and override XLR 1 when there's a cable connection and automatically switch the the fixed high impedance.

Silverface DOES support Unison on the mic input, just not on the HiZ.

You can track through Unison preamps but the actual Unison impedance matching isn't applied like it is with other Apollo's. It's still good, it's just less accurate, at least conceptually.
