Super lame, but I think everyone was concerned once the Gibson name sat next to Cakewalk's.

Yeah, more like terrorfied, I started with Cakewalk for Dos V1.0 My first big expense was my MPU-IPC which was the 1st lesser expensive Midi interface than the MPU-401

It was great company when Greg Hendershot was at the Helm. They've had a lot of ups and downs over the years but mostly ups.I can't believe its just going to die. You'd think someone would continue with it. I couldn't fathom Pro Tools just going away either, could any of you?

I’ve been using cakewalk since Sonar 5. Little shocked to say the least. I’ve recently started using Mixbus but I feel it’s more a good addition to Sonar than replacement since I’m still learning it. May look at Studio 1, good Black Friday sale on now. Or not, dunno, still processing it.

From the article: "...made this decision in order to focus on consumer audio electronics..."

Huh? It sounds like a bean-counter decision.

Yes it does, and these bean counters are used to making Thousands of dollars on Slabs of Wood and Steel and automation.

Except they’re likely not making all those dollars anymore, Gibson’s been apparently bleeding cash for a while now. I wonder what they mean by consumer audio electronics, Gibson branded Chinese Bluetooth headsets? Interesting...

It's a little sad since that's what I learned how to use a DAW with back in the 90's up to about 2001. Recorded a lot of stuff with it back in the day. But honestly, there are so many DAWs that are superior now, it's not a big surprise. I was actually surprised it still existed since I hadn't heard anything about Cakewalk/Sonar in at least a decade! Lots of competition now.

A decade? Have you been hiding under a rock? Sonar Platinum has been great and lots of development going on. It was THE 1st 64bit Daw, had bitbridge to handle 32 bit plugins while the rest of the industry caught up. Hell, Pro Tools is still playing catch up

Are there any pros that use it? I've never seen anyone using it. Pro Tools is behind everything IMHO, so that's not saying much, haha!

I would say I don't think I've ever seen a tutorial or demo video on anything where someone was using Sonar--like ever! The last time I even saw it in person was someone using an old 486 PC in around 2002. I guess I'm a DAW snob then!

Matt Hepworth our Forum creator/moderator uses it, along with many other Daws. I will admit it would be odd to schedule a recording session these days and go to the studio to find they are Only using Sonar but a lot of Artist love it. They have a very large community.
I've been using Studio One these days. Just curious, which is your Daw of choice?

How do you like Studio One? I'm looking hard at it. I'm just finishing up a new tune in Sonar as I write. Other than a couple of remixes for a client and unless there's buyout news soon I'm likely going to pick it up...

I love it, at first its like anything else. It takes time to get used to it. But that goes very quickly. I just took note of all the major things I need to do in any workstation. Then I set out to accomplish these tasks. It becomes a Cakewalk (Pun intended)
Nows the time to get it, half price for Black Friday

After using Windows and Sonar, I went to Pro Tools and Mac in about 2001 after using that while at the University, then moved to Logic 5 in about 2003 because I couldn't afford to pay for the PT updates every year (didn't have the student discount anymore) and have never looked back. For what I do, it works perfectly. I still use PT from time to time when at someone else's studio helping out, but I do less of that nowadays.

Use the one that fits you is what I say. It's not a war or a competition to me. I loved Sonar back then, but I was just starting out. Pro Tools at the time didn't have any MIDI so I had two systems synced for a while. Then once I moved to Logic I only needed one. Obviously a lot has changed since then for all the DAWs, but Sonar is just one I never see anywhere anymore. I've seen just about everything else pretty often.

I feel sorry for the Sonar users! At least Gibson had the decency to tell the users something, unlike Mackie who just let Tracktion slowly and silently die while the users remained hopeful for updates and bug fixes.

But I would be surprised if they would just let the IP sit there on a shelf? If they're not going to use the codebase for something else they better sell it off. ROLI perhaps?

Just in time for the holidays! This is kind of an abrupt turnaround when they have been pushing major udpates in the last year or two? I have not taken a look at the Cakewalk forum yet to see what anyone is saying over there but I hope some other smart outfit picks them up before too long. Glad I got in on the lifetime subscription deal before it died haha

In a way it's nice that I won't have to run all those pesky updates anymore I can just use what's there which is a lot. Sigh.
