Hi,

Can some one recommend me a good pair reference monitor for mixing/mastering. Don't what to buy. There are some many choices.

Something that can listen long time without getting fatigue.
Thanks,

Mostly mixing or mostly mastering?

\"Mastering\" mastering or \"make the mixes louder\" mastering?

Mackie HR-824's are excellent, got em for 1100 new thats what I use, it has adjustable cut off for 39,47,80hz, 1/4, 1/2 full space, frequency, etc. not everyone likes em. i produce drum n bass + garage so
it can be a bit exaggerated on the lows if i set it all the way down to 39hz, but any monitor that gets down to 45-60hz is good.

but i get very nice mixes on them, i used to use crappy ass Alesis Point 1's (only go down to 80hz)

My mastering engineer uses KRK's

Dynaudio BM6A also a good choice, tho its only 6.5\" woofer it goes down pretty low i know a lot of people love them

ADAM (havent really tested those out)

genelecs are nice, overprice though

it really comes down to personal taste. Take a CD of mastered tracks whether of your stuff or of the type of music you do and do a shootout at the local dealer. There are so many combinations of parts and approaches to studio monitors - i.e ribbon, fluid cooled ferric, silk tweeters, front bass ports, back bass ports, etc.

the other 1/2 of monitoring/referencing is acoustically treating your control room, otherwise it doesnt matter how eq'd or high/low end monitors you have, cause it will sound like crap in the car/boombox/pa.

Its a real art + science, im not an expert either, though i do talk with a friend who is an acoustic engineering whiz. i could go on, but ill let the other more experienced peeps here have their say.

I have a pair of 824's I have had for 7 1/2 years now. I love them. My only gripe is the tweeter was not a soft dome but a titanium. But they translate darn near perfectly.

My next monitor purchase will be in the 5k range. But these 824's have served me very very very well

I must say my humble HR824's have served me well and again the mixes really do transalate to the outside world - for the money their great - I don't like the mteal tweater and prefere softdome myself or ribbon but that cost's.

My next system will be the PMC TBA2's or a pair of Adam S3a's but you really get what you pay for when it comes to monitors.

Actually I spend 1/2 my mixing time on a mono autatone that cost me £30 and sounds wonderful for really understanding the A weighted part of the mix - funny really when apair of Adams cost £3000!!

For almost may be 2 or 3 hundred dollars more on that $1500,i would definately recommend genelcs 1030\"s,super details comparing to some of the mentioned monitors.

I think the EMES range are pretty cool, i use the PINKS with an AMBER HR sub as a full range solution - and the are very VERY listenable for long sessions....i really only got into them cause i saw them at a trade show and Michael their designer sat down with me and pulled one apart - and showed (visually and audibly) me why they were better than a lot of the other stuff around, they have some really interesting internals too....

oh and a silk dome tweeter - which is always a good thing...

The Event ASP8's have been popular lately, most people pick them over HR824's in side-by-side tests & the ASP's translate far better in my experience. I'm glad that so many people here have had good luck with their 824's but I really find the low-end on them to be too cloudy to be used as a reference.

PMC's, ADAM's, & passive Dynaudio's are all fantastic, of course. KRK's original V6's (before the newer kevlar ones) sound nearly identical to their $4k E8T speakers when mated with a sub.
