What's in a UAD Satellite box. PCI-e card?

Hi All,

I've asked google, and unbelievable, no one else ever thought to look?, in this day of YouTube show and tell etc. Before anyone says, why not look, I am suspicious of opening a perfectly operating expensive Octo TB2 enclosure for curiosity only. I own a Quad card I bought an external TB3 box for, and I was using it in another room of my studio, about to liberate it and put it in my tower PC. So..... to the meat of the subject, (at last?), Is the Satellite a PCI-e card in a board or just a PCI-e slot basically?. If so, that's coming out and going in PC too!!.

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Why unbelievable? Perhaps musicians or amateurs aren't exactly hunting for millions of subscribers in youtube mobile teardrop fashion - therefore you can't find such videos.

It is very likely that other TB OCTO owners have the same worries as you do. Why fix (or disassemble in this case) something which isn't broken? I know this answer isn't exactly what you are looking for.

You are not going to break it just opening it, I open 100% of my electronics, out of curiosity, as long as that does not involved breaking the enclosure (not the case with Satellites).

Don’t touch components for your own safety, or without a static strap (and only if your knowledge of electronics is sufficient), but otherwise there is no risk. You should be able to see whether it is a daughterboard or soldered on the mainboard, if nothing else.

For what it’s worth, my guess is that it is a bespoke motherboard, with no possibility to replace or transfer (to a TB3 enclosure for example). This may or may not be true for Firewire or TB2/TB3.

… but if I get my hands on any Satellites, I’ll happily post pics. I’m not entirely sure what you would do with that knowledge though, killing a card through static trying to transfer it is much more likely than bricking it by cracking the enclosure open.

I see you are in the UK though, so if you are within driving distance I am happy to help*.

* yes, including reimbursing full cost for damage, which is not going t happen, as any repair shop would do, if you left any piece of equipment with minor fault with them.

Hi Guys thanks :). I'm not a total twit with electronics, have done enough to be safe (eproms , soldering etc) over the years, I was just curious if anyone knew. If it IS a card I want to put it in my PC just to save space basically :). Plus I figure the flashy MB circuits in my ASUS MB PCI-e slots are probably quicker than the external TB2 with a TB3 adaptor Satellite. I get curious like this occasionally, when bored :).

I think you need to be certain you have the correct power connections. I think they differ between a pci-e and the in the box cards.

All good!
All good, all good… not so fast! I now have you to blame for my acquiring of a Satellite… those pictures felt like glancing at the magazine on the top shelf when I was 14, I had to start chasing the real thing.

Did you blame the store manager for chasing “the real thing?” We are talking Satellites, right?

My 14-old self had no concept of financial responsibility so I”m not sure but it is probably bad news :D

Let’s just say that I don’t think that his 14-year-old self was looking at pictures in Wall Street Journal or Forbes magazines.
