Arrrrrgghh!!!! Apollo Twin Duo Mkii constantly crashing after just a few seconds!

Can anyone help?? Yesterday I received my shiny new Apollo Twin Duo MKii along with a nice new Apple Thunderbolt Cable. It arrived yesterday morning, I set it up and recorded/played with it all day and everything was amazing!

Today I turned it on and all it does it crash/freeze my computer. Like constantly. Whether I'm using it in the DAW or not ... if it's on it'll freeze. If I turn it off during a freeze my computer immediately goes back to normal ... if I leave it while freezing it'll shut down.

I haven't changed anything for it do all of a sudden do this. There has also been nothing new installed.

I've tried trashing prefs from my DAW (logic pro x) and also deleted/trashed prefs/reinstalled the UAD console app.

It's driving me mad and I feel like I've just wasted £760 (which is a lot for me). I can't even record 10 seconds of a song without it freezing.

Do a factory reset on the Twin, then do a full (clean) uninstall and reinstall. Pretty good chance that will resolve it.

Also, make sure sleep is disabled.

Let us know if that takes care of it!

Thanks for your reply. Would disabling sleep make a difference even if the twin is crashing whilst I'm using it?

It seems to be getting more frequent.

If your system went to sleep while Apollo was connected, but prior to using Apollo, yes, sporadic behaviour is possible after.

A full shut down of both devices, then booting and disabling sleep will rectify any sleep related issue.

Always disable sleep (it can also do energy saver to the TB port).

I'd suggest doing the reset and uninstall/reinstall.

Ok cool. I will disable sleep, un-install, hard reset, reboot, reinstall and report back soon.

Thanks for your advice 👍

So here's what I did:

Disabled sleep
Uninstall UAD using the uninstall app.
Manually deleted prefs etc using this method: Delete Prefs
Emptied recycle bin
Turned off the computer
Hard reset the twin using this method: Hard Reset
Turned twin on, then iMac
Installed UAD again
It restarted
Authorized plugins
FREEZE and crash.
iMac automatically rebooted :(

It was literally 5-6 seconds before it crashed again. Completely unusable.

I'm so upset right now I'm actually just thinking of sending it straight back. My Focusrite 2i2 was better than this and never crashed once.

Sorry to hear that you are still having issues. The Twin on Mac is super solid. It could be something conflicting with the driver or even the cable, can you try a second TB cable?

I'm literally just starting to do a complete fresh install of OS X. I might head down to the Apple Store later and pick up another cable. But this one is literally 2 days old lol.

I'm also going to try the twin on my mbp retina to eliminate thunderbolt port issues - which I don't think there is as my iMac is only 2 years old and this is the first time the TB ports have been ever used.

Will keep you updated.

Thanks for your reply! 😊

Ok so quick update:

I installed the twin on my partners MacBook Pro which literally has nothing installed on it apart from the os. Exact same thing happens. Just starts to slowdown then freeze and turn the computer off all within a few seconds of it being connected to console.

I completely reinstalled my iMac with a fresh install of Sierra (not via time machine backup) so it's totally clean.

Same thing happens ... only thing is it seems to be getting worse. As soon as the Twin turns on an does a few click sounds my computer starts to slow and then stops completely.

If the Apollo is turned on before the computer then the computer won't load at all.

I didn't have any of this yesterday. So far I've had about 3hrs of use and around 10 hours of problem. Seem to be getting worse.

I'm off to get a new thunderbolt cable in a bit but I can't see all this just being that.

I'm really baffled with this?!?

Bummer. Sounds like if it's not the cable it's the Twin itself. Time to reach out to customer service at UA.

Yeah knew it wouldn't be simple lol. I'm going to head out and get a new cable just in case but not feeling very confident.

Thanks for all your help/advice so far.

That's not fun. Did you purchase it locally, and can take it back to the store for another?

If a solid state device is going to die, it will usually do so within the first couple of days. A bad component generates a bit too much heat, which causes that component to draw more current, which again increases the heat, which makes it draw more current, which...etc.

Thermal runaway aaaahhrrrggghhhhhhhhhhh!

I purchased it about 40 miles away. I'm waiting on them emailing me back. Definitely not fun.

Now I can't even install console because as soon as the Apollo gets power it'll freeze my iMac.

So annoying.
