Hi-z Bass record Appolo Twin - unnatural sound.

Hi there!

I’m having trouble with recording Bass guitar with my iMac and Appollo Twin Solo. I hope You guys can help me.

Our band is heading to record garage punk album (we are trying to sound like first Offspring album – very raw). However, with the first try to record bass we’ve faced problem that the bass sounds weird. We refer to the Offspring record (ok any other old school record) and in comparison, our bass sounds like, not in the dead center – a bit wider.

What we are doing – direct input in Hi-z. On the Console – Softube Bass Amp Room 8x10 Plug-In with the blend DI and AMP sound.

We use Logic pro X (software monitoring is off) as a DAW.

I’ve also bounced record and checked it in my Shure Headphone monitors. When I’m listening referring track, bass is pretty much sounds equal from both left and right headphone (true mono I guess), but our record sounds…I don’t know how to express this feeling, but it’s like losing its middle position.

Thanks for help in advance.

If I remember correctly, Logic Pro has a global setting to turn on the universal pan law. It bumps up center pan position by 3dB. Maybe this setting is turned off.

I think it would help a lot if you posted a sample of the track.

If it's truly a mono track in logic with no panning or effects on it then there is no reason why it wouldn't be dead center. I'm thinking that you might have some stereo bus processing that is causing this?

Could be that the DI and the modeled amp are out of phase with each other - it can give the bass a sort of hollow sound. Mute one of the tracks or if you are doing it within the Bass Amp Room plugin try move the blend slider fully to one side or the other to see if it sounds less hollow. There is a phase button as well so switch that in and out to see if it helps.

Is it possible you have the bass going to one of the Auxes? If so, that copy of the signal will be 32 samples late and cause phasing.

I like the old Offspring albums quite a bit. Feel free to post a short clip of the track you're working on. If you're more comfortable, you could PM me a link to keep it private.

Something you might consider down the road if your struggles continue. I run an active bass into Hi-Z input into the UAD Ampeg SVT-VR plug in to record into Logic X and on playback use UAD DBX-160 on the channel for playback and my bass problems are over with. Studio drummer called me and asked what I did to the bass because that is the perfect bass sound he has always looked for. As well my FW Apollo Quad can't even use the Unison feature via Hi-Z input and it still sounds great.

Certainly the first thing to do is remove the Softube Bass Amp Room.
