Help! NOISE ISSUE WITH APOLLO TWIN MKII QUAD!

When recording Apollo Twin MKII QUAD + Macbook Pro, there's an strange NOISE. Sometimes the recording is quiet at first, then a hiss slowly creaps into the recording. It slowly gets louder and louder and then it goes away. When I click the "Pad", the "PREAMP" or "MONITOR" buttons ..it stops randomly...then starts back up again.

I send this to UAD:

I've purchased an apollo twin MKII QUAD two months ago and I'm having an issue with it. There's an strange noise that comes and goes randomly when I'm recording. The noise appears only when the tracks on the console app are unmuted. I know that if i have the preamps to loud there's going to be some noise, but the problem here is that the noise is totally random. Sometimes is really loud and other times it dissapear. In order to make it go away I have to press the buttons on the TWIN. (Monitor or Preamp three or four times) But it's random again. If I press one of this buttons the noise can go louder, go softer or go away to a proper level.
I read in some forums that this kind of problems are happening to other people. I would like to tell me what's going on with my unit because it cost me a lot of money and it suppose to be a professional interface. Thanks.

Someone else reported a similar issue recently and they said that doing a hardware reset solved it for them. There are directions for that on the UA site (and probably here in a handful of places). Hope this helps.

In my notes I found this...

Apollo Hardware Reset:
1. Turn off Apollo
2. Hold pre amp, hi pass, and polarity simultaneously and turn the unit back on
3. A light should come on, when it turns off release the buttons

Hey. Thanks for all your replies. It didn't work for me. The problem is still there. I don't know where it comes from. It happens randomly. And also sometimes I can make it happen if I press the Preamp and Monitor buttons. Could it be a power supply issue?

I would suggest giving UA support a call (or email) in that case.

Hey, did you manage to sort out this problem? I'm also struggling with this.

Yes, UA said I should do Hardware reset and also try a different Thunderbolt cable.
The Hardware reset has not worked, :(
and I'm reluctant to buy another expensive Thunderbolt cable just as an experiment, when the one I'm currently using is basically new.

Has anyone fixed any issues like this by using a different Thunderbolt cable?

Colleagues and I have had serious issues with Thunderbolt cables - basically it seems you only really have two choices for reliability buy Apple or Belkin.

Thanks LouisC, I am using an Apple Thunderbolt cable currently. Maybe I should order a Belkin...
What kind of issues did you guys experience with your Thunderbolt cables?

I am having the exact same issue with mine. This just started happening about a week ago. I wonder if it has to do with either the latest Mac update or the latest UAD update. But my symptoms are reproduced just like yours are. I did a hardware reset and that seemed to fix it for about an hour and then it started again.

It is interesting, I also bought mine two months ago. I have an issue open with UAD support as of last night. We'll see what they come back with.

I have the same problem. I bought the twin three months ago and this behaviour started a few weeks back. I have done a hardware reset but it didn’t help. I connect via Apple cable to Octo satellite which in turn connects to iMac with an Apple cable. It is random and usually goes away if I cycle through the preamp button on the twin. Kinda bumming me out given how much money I’ve spent. Doesn’t seem to be related to plugins. Could it be related to apple OS updates?

It almost seems to me to be a build up of static electricity, I start the day off now with a reset of the interface. Then after about 30 minutes or so I cycle through the preamps turning the "PAD" buttons on and off until the noise goes away and the preamps stop spiking/clicking with each press.
Maybe there's something we all have in common with our setup?
I'm running the Mac pro trash can, the Apollo 8 which I bought about 6 months ago, I have a Furman power conditioner, and a Presonus Monitor Station. And they are all in the same wooden rack on the same power supply. My mic comes in straight from the booth without a patch bay. Any of that match your setups?

What OS versions are you all running, I suspect this might be something with the latest MacOS update. I've seen people reporting issues with it all over the internet with various pieces of addon hardware (not just UAD). If you have backups (you do have backups, right?) try and roll back to before the last OS update and see if the problem persists. High Sierra is super buggy IMHO, if you want a stable OS for music production purposes its always best to stay at least one major version back, that's what I do for my own studio and that's what I advise for all of my clients ...

Hey Gerk, actually I'm still on Yosemite (10.10.5) I avoid updating my OS because of all the bugs that accompany it. "If it ain't broke..."

Ok good to know (and I fully agree with that!) ... have you tried rolling back to UAD 9.5.0?

I've had the problem since UAD 9.4 I believe, always hoping the update to fix it. But it's a good idea. Maybe I should roll back to 9.3 ?

For troubleshooting it's generally the first step, try and narrow down when it started. There's a thread here that details rolling back and doing a firmware reset (if applicable) so it might be worth a shot. I mean worst case nothing changes ... I guess it depends if you need plugins that shipped with newer versions or not ...
