Problem with installing 9.5.2 - Solved

This is just to let you know that I had a problem coming from 9.4.0 to 9.5.2. Looking in hindsight, I don't think the specific software version has anything to do with it by the way.

I use a USB Twin on Windows 7.

When I ran the installer to update the software, something went wrong. I had insufficient disk space and this somehow caused a reboot during the install. After that I couldn't complete the installation anymore. It turned out the windows / MSi registry had been corrupted in some way.

I know this now, I didn't know this at first. I just got these messages: Screenshot1.png Screenshot2.png Screenshot3.png

Invalid Configuration Settings - Check Custom.Ini
There is a problem with this Windows Installer package
One or more issues caused the setup to fail

So I reran the installer for about 10 times and also tried to revert to 9.4.0. To no avail. I kept getting the same messages. Tried a reinstall (software, drivers and the roaming files). Still no success.

Meanwhile, no sound, no console, no uad monitor and exclamation marks in my Windows device manager. I contacted UAD support and they tried to be helpful but couldn't solve my problem (usual advice of reinstall, install without firewall, et cetera).

Then I bumped into a post on this forum wich drew my attention to a windows software utility. It is called the Microsoft program install and uninstall metacab
https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl...lock-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

Running this (and deleting all UAD registry entries including drivers) let me run the UAD installer successfully again. Now 9.5.2 is working like a charm.

This is just to let other people know, who might encounter the same problem during a new Windows software install (usually a very smooth process of just a few minutes). I saw a similar post on the UAD forum, but the problem described there was somewhat different than my problem.

This is the kind of post that should be pinned as a sticky, thank you Woodman, your'e a legend!
I'm wondering if it is possible for you to share your exact steps taken and procedures to successfully achieve your result.
Though I have followed UA instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling UAD2 software during my upgrade to 9.5.2, I am stuck in a constant cycle of failed installations
resulting in neither my Octo or my Twin USB hardware being recognised by UAD software.
Waiting for UA support would be another 3 + days in my case and my optimism is not high considering I have followed their suggested installation procedures to the letter. This seems a plausible solution and perhaps a necessary step to clean up all the failed install files and registry entries now piled up and serving no purpose.
I didn't catch what you system is, I am wanting to attempt this on Windows 7 x64 . It's fairly daunting though, for many years my UAD stuff has just worked, it has only been with the last 2 updates that I have had to really dig in and find out why these installers have having such difficulty and why the UAD software is not cleaning up after itself to remove the gigs of non pertinent installation files.
Most modern installation centres are really efficient and very seamless at installing. In my world, only my Waves and my UAD seem to be demonstrating installation behaviours one would easily construe as antique.
The solution with Waves is very simple for me, I just quit having had enough of their policies and hostile WUP protocol. As much as I love some of their plugins, there is absolutely nothing they make I can't live without. MY UAD2 on the other hand, is something I refuse to be with out, ever!
Thanks for your post mate, kindest regards gmh

When you ran this software, did you first use it's UNINSTALL feature pointed at UAD or did you run it first to troubleshoot INSTALL feature pointed at UAD?

I ran the UAD uninstall routine first (twice) but it did not work. I also tried CCleaner to clean up registry and installation files, but that did not work either

I'm on win7 64 also. I never experienced this kind of UAD installation problem before. I did have a problem once, but that appeared to be a faulty USB cable. In this particular case I already tried the more obvious steps (to run uninstall etc).

I'm not sure this is an installer problem as such, could be the way win7 manages installation files. But then again, the installer should 'foresee' this routine.

I agree. I'm not certain why this difficulty is occurring. In my own experience, the UAD install is mostly hassle free. This time though, I am concerned. The firmware Loader shows up in my device manager but neither my Apollo or my Octo drivers are loading, only the plugins. In the UA folder in my x86, there is no firmware for my Apollo USB or my Octo but there are strings relating to other UA appliances.
When I went through my registry, I could only find hotkey strings pertaining to particular plugins but nothing referencing the Firmware Loader or the drivers themselves. So I have cleaned everything out related to UA across my machine, including plugins. The plugins and presets all are installing successfully. It would have been very handy to just have the driver and firmware files available to run and install separate from the UA global installer.
I'm trying not to stress about this but today is Monday here in Australia and it's a scheduled work day for me. Trying to come up with a work around strategy to continue working on productions that contain UAD plugins is going to be a challenge. Last thing I want to do is have a WIP sound worse than when we started because I can't get half my system to work!
I'm not dead in the water and do have options but without my UAD it is going to be a bit like trying to replace a fine wine with tap water. I got up a few hours early to try and install 1 more time before I have to be ready for work, we'll see how it goes. Thanks for your insight and supportive communication, it really means a lot friend. Talk soon
